The Greek Tragedy Project
During this project the topic we focused on was Greek tragedies and tragedies in general. We learned how to create one and what the little aspects are that you need in a tragedy. We read two Greek tragedies, Oedipus Rex and Medea. After we each chose a social issue we wrote an essay on the both views on that issue. For example, gun control, in my essay I had to write four paragraphs. I wrote two of my paragraphs on from the point of view of being against gun control and the other two from the point of view of being for gun control. Once an idea and an example for what a tragedy looked like we moved on to the script writing and video portion of the project. Throughout this project we learned a great amount about the small details a tragedy is made up of and all the little aspects. Also how to make a short play revealing a social issue through your script and acting.
Project Reflection
Throughout this project I am most proud of my gun control essay. We wrote this essay before the final product which was the play on our point of view for our social issues. I am most proud of this because I learned a great amount of information about gun control and the gun laws in Colorado as well as I got the chance to to talk my family members about the specifics on firearms. During this portion of the project and I put an extreme amount of time and effort into this specific essay, I took a great amount of time to edit my paper so the final copy would be error free. I had many people critique my paper to get it to that point of my errors. I thought my writing skills highly improved and I thought the sentences and paragraphs were structured very well and I had a good amount of evidence and statistics to back up what I was stating. I’m very proud of the outcome of the essay.
The advice I would give a student next year to be successful would be to stay on top of it and make sure you finish what's required by the specific due dates. If you get behind in this project it makes it very difficult to catch up in class. For example, when Lacey and I were writing our script we got stumped and didn't know how to continue our script or elaborate on the characters and scenes. Resulting in us having to work on the script on our own time. One aspect of my project that I believe needed to be improved was the slight choppiness of our final product. The different clips and different lighting in each of our clips making the final video slightly choppy. Even though this did not affect the final product I think that if we controlled the lighting in our videos the final product would have been more professional looking and it would have had better quality.
Working in partners was beneficial in many ways but in others it was not. It was beneficial by having someone to help you with the workload as well as you can help each other with ideas. As well as having partners to create and video tape our plays helped a great amount. We each could incorporate each of our ideas to make our script stronger and more detailed. Partners were beneficial because if one person couldn’t work on it one day the other could. In other ways it was not beneficial, the work split and who does what. This wasn’t a major problem with Lacey and I but throughout the project there were a few times where we didn’t know who would do what. This was also a challenging aspect of our project was the filming. We didn't know how to take multiple videos and have them be in the same fame and not have the camera move. Overall I liked being able to have a partner in this project it made it a lot more fun and run smooth.
The most challenging task for me personally was memorizing the lines for that specific scene. Because of this we had to re shoot many scenes just to get the lines correct. This was challenging for me because I was the main character in our play, therefor I had many long lines. Another challenge task was changing to script once we realized we messed up on 3-4 of our lines on the day the script was due. I overcame this by fixing all of our errors in time to turn it in and splitting up our lines so that I could memorize the shorter lines. In the end we fixed all of our errors in our script and play before the due date and edited together all of the shorter clips.
